2011 dog bite fatality statistics

Dogsbite.org fatality statistics from 2011 are up!

Once again, pit bull attacks made up the majority of dog fatalities this year (over 70%), despite being less than 5% of the dog population. This has been true for the past 6 years, with the exception of 2009 (where they made up 44% of the fatalities). Almost all the other fatal attacks were from rottweilers (13%).

Another strong trend is adults, not children, being killed by pit bull type dogs in great numbers (more than half of victims). Full grown adults have difficulty defending themselves from these attacks.

  1. that extremely low tethered stat (low and declining) delivered a death blow to the nutters who overuse the "abused and poorly socialized" from their rolodex of excuses as to why pibble attacks.

  2. I also very rarely hear about dogs other than pit bulls seriously injuring horses.

Pit bulls were bred to launch sustained and extremely violent attacks on other animals without warning, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that they are the #1 killers of people and other dogs among all dog breeds. Pit bull fanatics can try to whitewash the pit bull's history all they want, but calling them "nanny dogs" or whatever won't alter the fact that they were and are bred for aggression and a very damaging biting style. Many dogs bite, but pit bulls tend to latch on to victims and shake them until (and even after) the victim is dead. There's a hideous video on youtube that shows a group of three pit bulls attacking another. Even when the victim dog is dead, the attackers still go at it.
